I also made several more changes regarding my social circle by limiting the interactions on my old social media and migrating to the new ones. From Discord to Matrix, Twitter to Mastodon, Reddit to Lemmy/PieFed… The migration gave me much needed fresh breeze of seeing new kinds of people, reminding me that the world is wide and there are varieties of people in it. It was hard to believe the stark difference between those groups, taking into account that both groups are on the Internet. Well, one’s on the Fediverse specifically but still.

The biggest difference for me was the amount of the background level stress caused by reading hyped posts written by Kool-Aid drinkers about using generative AIs, which made me increasingly frustrated for the last 10 or so months in my previous social group. This is one of the main reason why I migrated from Github to Codeberg (Codeberg explicitly declines to host LLM-related projects) too.

Maybe it was because I made those social connections in the job, or related fields on the Internet in the past, but it was hard to find people with the similar level of disgust against generative AI as I did in the last social group I was in. I figured that it would be mutually beneficial if I just got out of that group, instead of me continuously being frustrated at their posts and ranting about them.

And voilà, what I found was the group I really felt safe in it. I’m currently participating in the new community cherishing how important it is to have a safe haven to belong to. “The space that you don’t have to censor yourself when you say your beliefs out loud” was important for your mental health after all.

Expect some more blog updates to come. I planned to use the blog to log and compile what happened to me in the beginning, but I’m logging them on Notion and Obsidian instead now. I got some topics to write about and share other than those daily event loggings, so I’m planning to publish some in the future.

Here are links to my new socials below. You can also check them on the main page of my blog.

The Pebble was a smartwatch with an e-paper display, launched in 2012 and discontinued in 2016. Google opened the source of PebbleOS, which is the OS used on Pebble. In tandem with that, Eric Migicovsky, the founder of Pebble, announced the development of new Pebble hardware.

When Pebble was live, I was at university. One of our lab’s Ph.D. students was a tech-savvy early bird and had one. Given the current smartwatch market, I regretted not getting one alongside him until now.

Here’s the list I want from smartwatches:

Long battery life (no charging for at least a week)

Always-on Display with seconds display (no-go if the device requires user input like wrist gestures to display seconds)

Display notifications from smartphone

Date display in ISO 8601 format (YYYY-MM-DD)

It’s almost lamentable that Pebble is the only smartwatch brand satisfying all of the above. Most watches use AMOLED and touchscreen, draining the battery over the course of a single day. The battery life will worsen if you want to turn AOD on with a second display. Technically, you can satisfy all of the above using MIP Garmin watches with API level 2.3.0 or higher, but Garmin watches tend to be bloated due to those sports tracking features I don’t need, skyrocketing the price.

Then the blog article by Eric Migicovsky, the founder of Pebble, came to my eyes, tugging at my heartstrings.

You’d imagine that smartwatches have evolved considerably since 2012. I’ve tried every single smart watch out there, but none do it for me. No one makes a smartwatch with the core set of features I want:

Always-on e-paper screen (it’s reflective rather than emissive. Sunlight readable. Glanceable. Not distracting to others like a bright wrist)

Long battery life (one less thing to charge. It’s annoying to need extra cables when traveling)

Simple and beautiful user experience around a core set of features I use regularly (telling time, notifications, music control, alarms, weather, calendar, sleep/step tracking)

Buttons! (to play/pause/skip music on my phone without looking at the screen)

Hackable (apparently you can’t even write your own watchfaces for Apple Watch? That is wild. There were >16k watchfaces on the Pebble appstore!)

Exactly. Finding someone with value who is this well-aligned with you feels great. Based on those values, the new Pebble device seems like it’s damn sure instabuy for me.

You’d imagine that smartwatches have evolved considerably since 2012. I’ve tried every single smart watch out there, but none do it for me. No one makes a smartwatch with the core set of features I want:

Long battery life (one less thing to charge. It’s annoying to need extra cables when traveling)

Simple and beautiful user experience around a core set of features I use regularly (telling time, notifications, music control, alarms, weather, calendar, sleep/step tracking)

Buttons! (to play/pause/skip music on my phone without looking at the screen)

Logging What Happened

I’ve been unemployed for nearly a year since I left the company in April 2024, where I’ve worked for almost seven years.

I’ve been through many things around me, alongside some I’ve been doing for myself. I made a significant recovery in my mental health through cognitive therapy, and I made another considerable recovery in my physical health by healthy diet and weight lifts, for example.
The thing is, I never made any concrete log of those activities. That made my memory fade, sometimes resulting in repeating the same mistake over and over.

I’ve been using my Twitter account for microblogging and archiving crumbs of my thoughts and status. I literally wrote everything back then, so every time I wanted to know what I’d been through, all I had to do was look inside the past tweets I made there.
However, after several years, I found myself writing (or skipping) tweets centered around how others would read instead of jotting down everything I wanted to log. It could be the age I gained along the way; I don’t know, but that was happening, and it hindered me from logging what I wanted to write. I didn’t like it.

That’s one of the reasons I built my blog: to log and archive the things that happened, things I got through, and things I’ve been thinking of in a relatively longer format.
I’ll use this place to organize and archive my thoughts only for my future self. Even if I never read back what I wrote, writing it down in a relatively long form has some value in making me think more about it.

That’s the reason why I named this blog Rumination.

I love games. Maybe too much that I made some.
There is a nice loop to being good at games. First, record the play results explicitly or implicitly, then learn from your past mistakes and make incremental improvements throughout repeated runs. I recently found this method very efficient and effective while playing the games myself, and I could apply the same methodology to other acts in my life. It seems obvious, but it was way more engaging when I had a moment of inspiration. It could serve as a big internalized motivation.

That’s also one of the motivations that made me start blogging. I’m looking forward to making incremental improvements in my thinking and life by writing down what I have been thinking and doing in a rather detailed fashion.

Another motivation comes from recording the progress of making something.

I love making something new. I successfully finished some of the projects, making something by myself, but I never wrote or recorded anything about the progress anywhere. I regret not doing so.
Better late than never, though. I’m going to record the progress of projects that I’m doing right now or going forward, even things I’ve done in the past. The primary reason would be to be proud of myself for making something I believe valuable, but it could also help someone else doing similar things.

As someone who has a high mental hurdle to jump over to start something new, it’s often very stressful to do nothing but plan for the future. It takes a toll on me when those plans pile on, living in my brain rent-free.
Writing down the chopped-down version of those plans could alleviate that problem, finally doing something about what I wanted to do. It reminds me of those business records I had to make while working. I had no idea back then that would help me now.

Anyhoo, I’ve finally built my blog after a lengthy planning process. That would remove one of my burdens in my brain: having an unfinished project for such a long time. What a relief. In the future, I plan to share more about my personal development journey and the insights I’ve gathered along the way. I have no idea if I could continue blogging for a long time, but I’ll do my best. Peace!
